Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students are children of immigrants. They love to learn about their adopted country. We are starting a Social Studies unit on courage and tolerance. They need engaging high interest books along with science and art supplies to teach them about the famous Americans who have overcome hardships and shown courage to make a positive impact on our country and the world. This project will include books about famous American men, women, and minorities so my students will be able to see role models who look like themselves.

My students are wonderful, energetic second graders!

Our school is located in a high poverty immigrant community in California. The parents of most of my students have never finished high school and my students will hopefully be the first ones in their families to go to college. My classroom consists primarily of students who are learning English as a second language. I also mainstream hard of hearing students and learning disabled students in my all-inclusive classroom. In addition, I partner for enrichment activities with a 3rd grade class and a class of hard of hearing students and they will also participate in this project.

My Project

The goal of my project is to teach my class about courage and tolerance through the biographies of famous American men and women including African Americans and Hispanic Americans. These will include George Washington Carver, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Frida Kahlo, Jackie Robinson, Cesar Chavez, and many more.

Each week we will learn about one of these courageous Americans through books, videos, and photos.

My students will also learn about the important character traits that these famous people possess such as courage, perseverance, kindness, tolerance, and empathy.

We will also have science and art follow-up activities that will go with this project. After learning about George Washington Carver my students will get to plant peanuts and watch them grow. After learning about Frida Kahlo they will get to create their own self portrait and also draw their own nature scene and color it in with oil pastels.

My students love to learn about famous people in our country's history and this project will also include courageous American role models who look like them. I try to make my Social Studies lessons exciting by bringing the lessons to life so all students can be exposed to the curriculum.

I want my students to learn about some of the courageous people who have contributed to our country because it will help them learn about and appreciate the importance of diversity, courage, and tolerance in their adopted country. I hope this project inspires my students to stay in school and pursue careers in the humanities, science, and the arts.
