My students need a plethora of literature to choose from that aligns with the new core curriculum such as: Catching the Moon, When I Was Young in the Mountains, Stone Soup, and The Invisible Boy.

My Students
"If my books can help children become readers, then I feel I have accomplished something important." ~ Roald Dahl
For most children, becoming a good reader means having an abundance of literary genres at their fingertips.
Becoming a good reader means having an effective literacy program that offers many activities that support learning. This includes individual reading by the student, encouraging them to be more independent, and choosing books for themselves. The love of reading my students display is priceless.
Your generosity will shower my students with new reading materials to last throughout the year! My class consists of students with very diverse educational needs. I have students who speak English as a second language and students who read anywhere from a kindergarten to a third grade level. Our school houses almost twelve hundred students in kindergarten through fifth grade. We are an underfunded, Title I school, in an inner city, where many ethnicities come together to learn and explore while speaking over forty languages! The students in my second grade class are a diverse bunch. They live in a high poverty area and they all receive free breakfast and lunch.
My Project
Our school will implement a new reading series into our classes this year. Although I am eager to explore the new materials, I believe using a literature based curriculum will also benefit my students. My colleagues and I have reviewed several pieces of literature that will best suit the needs of our students throughout the school year.
My students will embark on a new journey every week with the help of talented authors and their magnificent tales!
I believe when a child enjoys a book with a good story and enchanting illustrations, learning takes a more natural course. Curiosity fills the room as students are amazed by the sights and sounds of the invigorating story. They begin to make connections, ask questions and share experiences. The story books I have requested will allow me to teach various reading strategies, such as making inferences, analyzing and summarizing texts, as well as comparing and contrasting characters. The literature chosen will provide memorable interaction amongst students and their peers, providing meaningful conversations as we experience the literature together.
