My students need literature for our math classroom. The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes and Your Fantastic Elastic are great resources for demonstrating a motivation mindset. Other books focus on fractions, place value, & financial literacy.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our classroom consists of a diverse group of learners. Most of my students come from low income families without a lot of resources and opportunities. Although they are not always intrinsically motivated, they do love competition. Competing against me, their peers, or themselves gets them excited about what they are learning,.
They have been learning that our mindset is what is most important to our success by transforming a fixed mindset into a motivation mindset.
My students are changing their ideas from "I can't solve multi-step word problems," to "I can't solve multi-step word problems YET!"
My Project
This variety of books will enhance our mathematical classroom library. Students in my class learn better when they can make math connections to the real world. Stories also help them to create mental images which allows them to be more successful in problem solving. These books will be used by me to teach during mini-lessons and by my students during station work to reinforce mathematical concepts we are working on. Books like Prices! Prices! Prices! :Why They Go Up and Down, Follow the Money!, and Who's Buying? Who's Selling?: Understanding Consumers and Producers strengthen students' understanding of important financial literacy concepts.
