Don't allow statistics to overcome your abilities!! Statistics show that boys show less interest in Language Arts than Math and Science. We want to make a difference and increase the percentage of elementary boys' reading and have outstanding performance on standardized tests as well
This is my fourth year teaching and my first year teaching a fourth grade single-gender boy class.
The socioeconomic status of the population at my school is low-income based where 96% of the students are entitled to free and reduced lunch. My students are eager and willing to learn, but don't have enough support at home for reading- no one to read to, literacy games are scarce, technology-use is very limited- which decreases their willingness to have the urge to read more. Just recently, eleven out of my twenty boys' scores decreased within a two-month period from a practice standardized test assessed on a computer. This was from a lack of reading at home and lack of using technology equipment. Most of the boys are hands-on and would be more engaged in reading if they knew they could create their own version of the stories they read by recording a play.
My Project
With the resources provided, students will read chapter books in their literature circles and be assessed on what they know by creating a PowerPoint presentation on their book, or having the choice of acting it out in the classroom and viewing it on the laptop that will then be projected on the mounted Promethean white board so students can have access to viewing it. This will give the boys the drive to read more, rather than JUST taking a test at the end of reading. There will also be LITERATURE CENTER days of the week (two to three times a week) where students will rotate in two different centers every 30 minutes for one hour with the resources provided. It's hands-on, engaging, and will increase the drive of wanting to read more and enjoying reading. Having their own computer to practice typing skills and learn Microsoft office Word and PowerPoint for the purpose of reading can prepare them for the business aspects of life.
Please support this project for my class because I can only do so much with trying to engage my class with reading.
Students have limited use of the computer in my classroom because of the inconsistency of it operating. I truly believe that having technology that they could access and literacy games to use for practice, will gain a more pleasure and enjoyment for reading!! This would truly be an experience that they'd never forget :-)
