This is my fourth year teaching and my first year teaching a fourth grade single-gender boy class. The socioeconomic status of the population at my school is low-income based where 96% of the students are entitled to free and reduced lunch. My students are eager and willing to learn, but don't have enough support at home for reading- no one to read to, literacy games are scarce, technology-use is very limited- which decreases their willingness to have the urge to read more. Just recently, eleven out of my twenty boys' scores decreased within a two-month period from a practice standardized test assessed on a computer. This was from a lack of reading at home and lack of using technology equipment. Most of the boys are hands-on and would be more engaged in reading if they knew they could create their own version of the stories they read by recording a play.
