Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students contain multitudes! They love to talk about where they come from, and tell their unique stories, sometimes with shyness, but always original. Some of our students, despite suffering trauma, show up, day after day, to get an education and participate in their school community activities.

In particular, my class of English Learners strove to improve their reading skills, with works like To Kill a Mockingbird and Romeo and Juliet, and created beautiful personal poetry anthologies about their lives.

Many of these kids have jobs after school, so they travel and work during weeknights. Many live with relatives who are not their immediate family members. They persevere through these challenges, and this is why I admire them so much.

My Project

Current, young adult literature will add to our classroom library and help increase student reading levels. School must compete with social media, so it's my goal to instill a lifelong love of reading and make daily reading a habit in our class. With these books, our students will read about characters who look like them and come from similar backgrounds. They will connect with the conflicts and persevere by finishing novels with protagonists who are like them.

Our students will be excited to see their classroom library filled with new, high-interest books that reflect their own lives.

Their library contains many books, but most are classics from the canon, some of which don't peak their interest. Our students like to use the library because it contains a rug and comfy couches. They will use the library even more with access to these unique titles.

I plan to have students read these books in Literature Circles to analyze the themes, characters, structure, setting, and narrative point of view in the works. These skills meet the California Common Core standards, and students will transfer these skills to the more difficult literature we will read as a class. Students will give book talks to the rest of the class to encourage others to read them, and we will create a book review wall in the hallway to interest other students schoolwide. Help us hook our students into loving reading!
