Our students are low-income, neighborhood students in a densely-populated area of Los Angeles. Many are second-language learners. However, they are brilliant, caring students full of potential, and many of our graduating students are accepted to top four-year universities. They typically lack access to small classrooms, rigorous expectations, and exposure to the major works of the English language. Thus, our school is promoting critical reading, thinking, and writing to prepare these students to be college-ready. Many of the students have been in the United States for two or three years. Thus, though disadvantaged in many ways, these students can learn and want to succeed.
