Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Reading is the single most important skill necessary for a happy, productive and successful life. A child that is an excellent reader is a confident child, has a high level of self esteem and is able to easily make the transition from learning to read to reading to learn."
Most adults have memories of being read to as a child.
For my kindergarten students, this is not always the case. These families, who are living in a high poverty area, often are struggling, so reading is not always a priority. Many of my students have not been exposed to literature of any kind when they enter the classroom for the first time. It is amazing to see their excitement when reading new books. I have many students who are extremely interested in non-fiction text, which exposes them to topics and animals they have never seen or even heard of. I have an extremely awesome class this year, and I am so excited about the opportunity to have books donated to this amazing group of kids.
My Project
My students will use the non-fiction text to learn about topics in which they do not have a lot of knowledge. They will also use the non-fiction books to conduct research on the topics. The literature will allow us to learn about characters, setting, sequencing, and questioning. It will allow my students to learn at the highest capacity.
With high quality text in the classroom that grabs students attention, I hope to make life-long lovers of reading.
Kindergarten is the foundation for learning, and I would like to give them strong literacy skills that they will need for the rest of their lives.
