Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is home to 18 love-bugs coming from a variety of home lives, but in our classroom we strive to make sure each kindergartner has an exceptional start to their career as a Rocket, shooting for the stars and never settling for anything less. Since day one, my students are continually growing into an eager, engaged, and caring group of learners full of questions and curiosities.
Despite the limited resources many students begin with, we start the beginning of each school year with a sense of wonderment and positivity that will foster motivated learning throughout the school year.
Regardless of how each evening ends or how each morning begins, my students walk through the doors of our classroom at 8:00 each morning and inspire me with their resilience, their joy, their love, and their determination. Every child brings different strengths to our class, and that diversity makes our room a beautiful place to be!
My Project
We are hosting our first large literacy night in many years this year at our wonderful school. We will have games, Readers Theater performances, raffles, a Book Fair, and even a published author who is coming to share his journey with us! One of the games we plan to have is a "Book Walk" - students dance around to music and then sit on numbered chairs. If their number is pulled, they get their choice of a brand new set of books to take home!
Literacy Night is about making reading fun and helping to support good reading practices at home; there is no better way to start than giving students high-interest books with which they can begin building their own personal libraries!
Dr. Seuss once said, "The more that you read, the more things that you know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Each book that we are able to place in the hands of a child is an opportunity for them to read, learn, grow, and adventure a little bit more. With these books, students will be able to fall into the pages of new adventure, build their reading skills, connect with their families, and continue on their journeys to becoming lifelong learners.
