Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are an amazing group of 6th grade children, all of which come from a household in which English is a second language. They have difficulty with reading fluency, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar.
I teach in California at a Title One school in which approximately 70% of our students get free or reduced meals from the school district.
With my specific group of students, they all are learning English as a second language. For many of them, vocabulary, spelling, and reading fluency pose a challenge that keeps them below grade level as readers.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of the book Esperanza Rising. I am hoping to acquire these books and be able to give them to my students so that as we read them together, and explore the story as a class, they can highlight and write in the margins of their own copy. I would use these books not only as a tool to practice reading, and answer writing prompts, but to define new vocabulary, to summarize lines, as well as highlight use of figurative language.
Please consider our group for this donation.
Having their own copy of Esperanza Rising would benefit my class by allowing them the ability to write within their books, and highlight their own texts. This would help them become better spellers, and help them understand and make connections with what they read a lot easier.
