This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am in the process of putting together a collection of books to offer students so they can participate in Literature Circles. A literature circle is basically a book club in the classroom in which students self-select a novel to read with a small group of classmates.

My goals for the project are for students to apply what they are learning in the whole class lessons within their literature circles.

Students will be reinforcing skills within the language arts standards in vocabulary development, reading literature, and writing. The books I've chosen all focus on themes around climate change. and environmentalism and are all for middle readers.

My students are mostly of a low-socioeconomic background and tend to have low reading skills. All too often they approach reading tasks as a chore; it's hard for many of them. To increase motivation in reading, it helps to be excited and interested in the reading itself. By allowing students to choose a novel that interests them and to read the novel with friends is a great way to build motivation and reading stamina.

I've had success with Literature Circles in the past and would like to bring them back to my classroom. It's hard to do this when one doesn't have multiple copies of the same novel, variety so I can offer choices, and novels with varying lexile levels. It is possible to do with books online, but I really want my students to get off the screen sometimes, and it's so much better to hold an actual physical book for so many reasons.
