Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are scientists. My students are mathematicians. My students are readers. My students are authors. My students are explorers. My students make discoveries each and every day.

Our Science Academy provides our students with a fast paced and rigorous STEM curriculum.

It is our mission to provide our students with a challenging and inquiry-based STEM curriculum to maximize individual potential and ensure that our students succeed in a globally community. Our goal is to expose students to as many learning opportunities that will prepare them for the future as possible, all while bringing to the forefront ideas and concepts that they may not have considered before.

My Project

During our third quarter, we focus on literature circles that tie into the shorter reading pieces we read as a whole class. Through this process we want students to either gain or continue to have access to interesting books that are relevant to their lives.

These critically acclaimed books are thought-provoking and will encourage reflection and conversation with other students, as well as potential action by the readers.

Our current literature circles titles focus on the Holocaust and Civil Rights Movement, but with the addition of the novel, "Refugee" by Alan Gratz our students will be able to gain the perspectives of children who faced adversity and overcame it during the Holocaust, Cuban immigration peak in the 1990's and the current Syrian refugee crisis. By reading a book that shows just how these circumstances occur time and time again, our students will be able to have discussions and produce solutions on how to help keep them from happening again. These books will provide the segue to discuss topics that are often uncomfortable such as racism, cultural diversity, immigration and overcoming adversity. Can books save lives? We believe they can.
