My second grade class is full of students with a thirst for knowledge. Second grade is a time where kids develop their love of learning and get excited about their academic accomplishments!
I teach in a Title I school in rural Georgia, with over half of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
Students in my class are determined, storytellers, questioners, listeners, eager, and curious. They make my job fun, because I get the privilege to introduce our classroom community to new information and ideas.
My Project
During this year in school, students are still learning the foundations of reading, but are then applying their reading skills to comprehend the text. Students need to be interested in what they are reading to really be motivated during this critical time.
I want my students to be holding real, quality chapter books in their hands during literature circle time!
We often teach with basal-type readers, which are good for teaching reading, but are more generic. Giving students authentic chapter books will spark their interest, provide more complex ways to analyze their comprehension, and, as my classroom library builds, give students more choice about what they read in literature circles.
The selected books for this project also vary in level from the beginning of second grade (2.0) to the beginning of third grade (3.0). These books also correspond with the Accelerated Reader Program, which our school uses as an incentive and way to measure student growth. The resource guide on this list aligns with a Guided Reading framework that we use in our classrooms, and will help to guide effective literature circle discussions.
