My students need sets of high-interest fiction books to begin literature circles. In a class with 18 boys and 4 girls, books that readily appeal to boys is a MUST!
"I hate reading." My students have arrived at high school with a distaste for reading, and I'm determined to change that! With engaging books at an appropriate reading level, my students can move from being frustrated with reading to experiencing success and developing a love of texts.
At our small, suburban school in Connecticut, my students recognize the importance of reading to their life long success.
However, for various reasons, they've fallen behind and many have been deemed "remedial readers" for their entire educational career.
In my Reading Lab course, a supplement to their English course, I want my students to learn comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary strategies that will help them understand what they read in any class. Most importantly, I want my reluctant teenage readers to have the opportunity to read books of their choice, which will ultimately help them develop a love, or at least a 'like', for reading. Matching the kids with the right books is a great challenge, but with these high-interest books, I'm hoping to get students excited about reading.
My Project
The materials I've requested are geared towards my predominantly male class. With a mixture of fantasy, science fiction, mystery, realistic fiction, and nonfiction, I hope to appeal to all students' reading interests. Not only will students get to choose which book they'll be reading, they'll also be participating in literature circles of 3-5 students, which meet during class to read and discuss the book. It's an authentic, real-world approach to reading. Adults meet in book clubs of their choosing, and so should our teens!
Ultimately, this project is all about providing engaging books to my struggling readers.
I want them to like to read, and with time to practice and increased motivation to read, I'm sure reading progress will be made. These books are critical to get my kids motivated to read. And as we know, the more you read, the better you get!
