This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Distance learning has been a challenge for our students, parents, and teachers as well. The challenges we all face vary in nature, but currently, it is undoubtedly an economic challenge for us all. Our school is a Title I school where 100% of our students receive free breakfast, lunch and supper.
My young scholars came back ready to tackle the 2021-2022 school year with excitement and perseverance, despite the obvious circumstances due to the Covid 19 pandemic and other obstacles they are facing.
My kids come to class every day eager to learn. Before starting our instructional day, we take a few minutes to discuss what is going on in their life, around their neighborhood, our state and/or country.
My Project
Many elementary school-aged children read books without really "getting into" them. Often times kids are just decoding, but they do not really understand, in depth, what they read. I have a select set of titles that I would like for us to "read" this school year. We are more than halfway through our first novel. My kids can't wait to start the second one. For over ten years now, I have been teaching all English Language Arts standards through guided Literature Circles. I have yet to hear a student tell me at the end of the year that they don't like reading. In fact, I get the opposite. At the beginning of the year, I give my students a Reading Survey. The results are almost always the same. Kids don't like reading "long books." By mid year, all they want to read are novels...and they really do finish reading them.
With these books, my students will be able to increase their fluency, vocabulary, literary elements knowledge, writing skills, but most importantly they will learn to listen, think, and speak critically as they analyze and learn to love reading.
My kiddos are learning to answer text dependent questions by citing the text. They are having whole group and small group conversations as they discuss themes or analyze why a character behaved a certain way.
I feel strongly that my students leave my fourth grade class with a strong sense of how to read and what reading really is. They get so excited when I tell them they can annotate on their book because IT IS THEIR BOOK. Providing these books for my kids fulfills more than just reading! It turns them onto reading. I love reading and model that love of reading to my kids. It brightens up my day!!
