This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is the inaugural year of art education at my school. My students need a creative outlet affirming their identity using books featuring People of Color as the foundation of our studies.

My school is under new leadership and as a school we are renewing our focus on fine arts through art and dance.

Our school of over one thousand students is primarily Hispanic and many of my students have never gotten the opportunity to create works of art that they are invested in. While I know that many teachers, especially in the lower grades try to incorporate arts and crafts into their lessons, our students rarely get the opportunity to create pieces that are only limited by their imagination.

My Project

My students will use these resources every single day. We will begin each day by focusing on a piece of literature to drive our art instruction. We will be able to focus on the elements of art present in the illustrations as well as reading comprehension strategies which my students desperately need. Our classroom is choice based so students will have the opportunity to use the materials they deem necessary to create their works of art. My students will have the opportunity to paint, draw, sculpt, weave and build new masterpieces every time they enter our classroom. For this reason, the plastic tubs included in the order are integral to keeping our classroom organized and ready for every child.

Focusing on literature in art allows our students to respond with visuals removing the stress some students feels when they are forced to use verbal or written communication.

We will be creating a stronger conceptual understanding of reading comprehension that will translate into their general education classrooms.
