Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A teacher's joy is when the students become part of the story they are reading. This happens when they make connections through dramatizations and read aloud. Some of my students are below reading level. Acting and role playing opens doors to true long lasting learning. Pictures save the time.

My students need these tools because it will help them document the process of bringing characters to life.

Recorders will help groups record performance and learn. My students are inner city kids from the Bronx with unrealized potential. Those who read well need to be challenged to the next level. Those who struggle to read need to be challenged to go beyond the words on the page. They find it difficult to imagine the plot. Theater places everyone on the same playing field. After reading and understanding the plot of the narrative, students are asked to re-write the story into a screenplay. They screenplay is then performed. Students are challenged to not just memorize but to truly understand the story & be able to re-tell it in their own words. In my experience as a teacher these are the moments that students remember through high school. These performance are helpful and allow students an opportunity to prepare for the presentations of the thesis projects in May.

My Project

The camera will be used to document the process of re-creating the plot. Students will be photographed as the work in groups or individually takes steps to develop the scenes. The Flip will be used by groups to film their version of the screenplays. Having 2 recorders will help the various groups film their work. The potential for growth is great here because students will have an opportunity to produce a skit and examine the work they have done because it would be recorded.

Students watch television and movies all the time.

That takes no real imagination. These tools in the hands of young innovate minds who will be challenged and directed will prove to life changing for my students. I can testify as a this technique works. I have used it before.
