My Students

I want my students to be able to read at their grade level so that they can access information just as their general ed peers have.

My school is a cornerstone of a rural community with a high poverty rate. Our school staff strives to provide the students with a positive, safe, and nurturing environment where they can grow academically and as individuals. My students are those who require specialized instruction in order to experience success. They face hurdles that cannot be comprehended by the majority. They have an incredible amount of potential, but must first be given the resources to overcome the disabilities that block their access to that potential. The most common learning hurdle that I have seen with my student involves the many facets that contribute to reading well. While I have a nice, well-decorated room to include a reading rug that I purchased, I don't have any books at all. Resource room teachers are not given any books, leaving me to buy all the materials needed to succeed.

My Project

My students enjoy actually reading books and planning to share what they learned with others. What a better way to expose students to past and current events than through the use of books. Their love for reading will be expanded in part because of your generosity. Kids grow learning from one another and your help will allow them to do just that. These students will be able to not only read, but discuss and get more involved in events that will affect them directly. Also, the students will be able to develop their character education through the use of modeling appropriate behaviors. What a better way than to do this by tapping into their love of reading.
