My students need access to young adult books in Spanish. Having these books in our library will encourage pleasure reading and meet the needs of our increasing Latino student population.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a library media specialist in a low-income, urban school district with students who face many challenges both in and out of their classrooms - many of whom come from single parent homes and receive free or reduced lunch. While improving student literacy is a primary focus for our school, two-thirds of our students read below proficiency for their grade level.
My library focuses on providing resources that meet the needs of all 1600 of our students, their interests and their abilities.
Our students represent a multitude of different backgrounds - economic, ethnic, and religious - and their abilities are as diverse as they are! As our school demographic and student interests change, so too must the resources my library provides.
My Project
Our Latino/Hispanic student population in our school has increased tremendously! Many of these students are bilingual or ELL (English Language Learners). Adding Young Adult Spanish books to our library collection fulfills our mission to encourage a love of reading to all our students, while also bringing familiarity to those students who speak Spanish. These students will be able to check out books to bring them home to read and share with family. Our ELL students, whose days are filled with an unfamiliar and different language, along with new learning experiences, can feel excited about fitting in and finding books in a language they know. Now matter the language, those who read, succeed!
