Literacy Town Makes Learning Real for ESL

My students need real-life objects (realia) paired with alphabet sound, letters, and rhyming tubs, play block dolls, and books to learn about and love their community from their cultural perspectives!

My Students

Unique, sparkling-eyed ESL kids want an equally unique way to learn. Their imagination runs high. Extra energy and fun brings life to the classroom, and my students have plenty of both.

We want to move, sing, and play in the real world as much as possible-- to connect our brain neurons to life in a way that'll deepen our understanding, ignite imagination, and keep us learning forever.

That is why the projects I like to choose keep the kids engaged in the world around them.

My Project

Studies prove that REALIA, or real-life objects and photos, not only engage students in fun learning, but also help kids retain learning longer--especially new language learners. To make this happen...

We're building a Realia Town in our classroom to bring our community and homes to life in ESL!

We'll set up community buildings with real miniature objects and pictures, with English-labeled decodable vocabulary and phrases. We could visit about 80 places, but now we'll start with a just a few--like the firehouse, the police station, the school, the home, and the hospital! For this, we need the following:

THE BOOK REALIA

Chuck full of ideas and activities, this will enable me to keep students engaged in Realia Town using their unique abilities.

MULTICULTURAL FAMILY FIGURINES

Communities are founded on families in all colors, and sizes. We'll use these to identify and visit community centers in our room. Maybe a boy will visit a park with a friend.

MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITY HELPER FIGURINES

Communities thrive with helpers, like nurses, doctors, and fire volunteers. These figures will help our students thrive in Realia Town.

DEAR DRAGON BRINGS THE COMMUNITY TO LIFE

"Dear Dragon,' a fun, popular character, tells kids about growing up in a healthy community. The library-sturdy books I've chosen strengthen participation in a healthy community and family.

LEARNING TUBS WITH REALIA (REAL MINI OBJECTS)

These tubs use real mini objects to learn letters, letter sounds, letter blends, and rhyming-- a must to learn community vocabulary.
