Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a diverse low-income community of children with a high population of English Language Learners and students with special needs. I am currently supporting 20 students with specific learning disabilities including dyslexia at our school. My caseload ranges from sixth to eighth grade students with the need for intensive foundational reading instruction.
Despite all that’s happening, my students are resilient and doing their best.
Their drive for success inspires me to be a better teacher to ensure that I am meeting their needs.
My Project
Many of my students with special needs has demonstrated a lack of understanding and learning growth due to the environmental stress, fear, and sense of helplessness caused by the pandemic. Their learning deficits have already caused them to fall behind, and now the constant changes in their lives have created even greater gaps.
In order for my students to thrive and feel successful, they need to feel secure and know that caring adults support them.
I have created a budgeting incentive program in hopes to help improve my students’ reading skills and teaching them a little bit about checks and balances. Most importantly, it will allow them to feel secure and supported during these trying times. To help make this program successful, I need support with supplying these rewards to my students. I would like to reward them with some of their favorite things such as chips, stickers, gift cards, and school supplies.
