Help me give my students novels and reading material that will help bring literacy to each subject of the day. A class set of Lions of Little Rock will help make connections and love of reading.
The 5th grade team at my school has been focusing on comprehension during our small groups time. It is so important for our students to understand what they are reading in all subjects. We have noticed this year that our students get really excited to make connections to the time period in history we are learning about and their novels.
Novels can help students relate to a time period and see the importance of the change in laws we talk about.
I have one class set of Lions of Little Rock which is a historical fiction novel that takes place during the civil rights movement. We address these topics when we cover government and the bill of rights. It is hard for our students to picture the world during this time. I have another partial class set of the Sign of the Beaver to add to our current copies. I have also added several copies of a science book that will help us incorporate reading with our science standards. As well as novels that 5th grade students have recommended and are excited to read.
