This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Inspiring a love of books and reading is one of my true passions as a first grade teacher! Through literacy centers, including listening to books on tape, my students will be engaged in meaningful learning that will allow me small group time to help them succeed.

I teach at a Title 1 school and have many students who come from low income families.

Our classroom and school provides a safe place to learn and grow. My first graders love to learn, and school is like a second home. First graders are like little "sponges", and are eager to "soak" up new information and to learn all they can. We truly become a family, learning together and working cooperatively. Our school has many volunteers, including parents and community members, who help support us in and out of the classroom.

My Project

I currently have books on tape in my classroom, but do not have the resources to implement their use. By using the requested cassette players, students will be able to individually listen to books on tape and complete reading response pages. One of my goals I am working towards is fostering reading independence in my students. This includes books on tape, also called Listen to Reading, an important component of our day. Our cassette players and headphones will be set up in a Listening Center, with the cassette, a copy of the book, and reading response pages for each child. By having individual cassette players, several children can be completing this activity at one time, with each child reading a book that is at their current independent level. Listen to reading provides models for fluency and expression for children learning to read, as well as being a great source for students who are English language learners!

One of the biggest challenges in helping students reach their reading goals is providing small group time with each child, especially with class sizes having increased over the last several years.

By having students engaged in centers like Listen to Reading, I will be able to maximize my time in small groups with students, while the rest of the class in engaged in meaningful literacy activities.
