Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a school where more than three-quarters of our students come from low-income households. Their local schools that suffer the unfortunate consequences of systemic oppression: low-funding, under-resourcing, etc. They come from a community plagued by discriminatory policies, poverty, and violence. My students constantly battle against circumstances that all too often lead to frustration, fear, and failure.

My students are bright, energetic, and full of potential, and we must not let circumstances beyond our control hinder their growth as learners.

They want to be successful. They want to positively impact their futures. They want to learn. And I want to provide them with every opportunity to be the students I know they can be.

My Project

My English and ELD (English Language Development - for newcomers to the US) classes need basic supplies--pens, pencils, paper, highlighters--in order to grow into the readers and writers they are capable of becoming.

Having paper and writing utensils is a critical necessity, and it is inequitable to ask students to provide their own supplies when this means that some students inevitably will be left out.

Providing school supplies means that all students have the opportunity to learn and succeed.

Literacy--reading, writing, annotating--are essential skills that help prepare students for academic and life-long success. Help me give my students the materials the need and deserve.
