Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine learning new math concepts in a different language. It would be really confusing without visuals to help make it easier. We need more literacy and vocabulary in our math block to tackle those new concepts!
I teach First grade at a Title 1 school in North Carolina.
My students have extremely diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds and even more diverse academic backgrounds ranging from below grade level to above grade level. My school has a 96% free and reduced lunch eligible population. My students are hard working and deserve every opportunity for learning that the more affluent schools down the street get on a daily basis. I have 14 English language learners in my class that need help visualizing new math concepts.
My Project
Math books make the new concepts much easier to grasp. They provide visuals for students to mimic and copy and apply to their own practice. They are also fun to read for extra practice. These math books also come with lesson plan resources that I could use to create differentiated lesson for my English language learners. My students will be able to read these books, review them and practice math concepts using them. It will also help build background knowledge on the concepts.
Next time you think about how you learned math, think about all the fun and engaging things you used to master those concepts.
These books would do wonders with my ESL students and help their learning excel.
