My school like many others in Las Vegas have a small amount of library books. My students have access to donated or gently used books from our own classroom library. Our current library was inherited from previous teachers and local thrift shops. Most of these books are either too old or worn. We ar

I am a second year teacher working with 4th graders in Las Vegas.

Mostly all of my students are eligible for free breakfast and free or reduced lunch. Although most have challenges outside of our class, they come to school eager to learn. I have an expression to ensure we are ready to get started. It is, “Are you ready Freddy? They respond, “My name is not Freddy, but I am ready”. Currently my class is reading at different levels from struggling readers to reading at 3rd grade level. The class library today is limited in books to accommodate the diversity of my students. Consequently, I have students that get easily discouraged because books are too challenging. I would love to have leveled readers to provide my students with books at their reading level. I feel that my students need to develop a passion for reading and I want to foster their enthusiasm to learn.

My Project

The leveled library books will serve many purposes in our classroom. They will be utilized for guided reading and book reports. Students will have the opportunity to read them independently and with partners. I am hoping to obtain both fiction and non-fiction books. I feel that it is important that students are exposed to several different genres. Some of my students do not have the opportunity to go to a library outside of school. I want our classroom library to give them access to a wide assortment of books. I believe that this will give students the opportunity to find books that are interesting, as well as challenging for them.

This donation of books will make a wonderful addition to the students in my portable.

Primarily, there will no longer be sad faces asking me to mend falling pages or if the can borrow some tape. Next, they will have the opportunity through these books to be exposed to more up to date topics that would only be available if we actually had donors that provided new books and would truly be valued by your generosity. Our class is in desperate need of leveled books to increase their literacy levels.
