Literacy Mic's and Literacy Labeling

My students need the phones to help students to hear their own reading, which in turn improve reading fluency. The laminator will help us build a print rich environment.

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

A typical day in our Kindergarten classroom is filled with smiles and love! We spread joy to everyone while maintaining a learning environment that allows all of us to work effectively. We are known as the University of Alabama classroom!

My school is an inner city elementary school but my students are passionate, capable, bright and dynamic!

My school is 99% African American as well. I love my kindergarten class and I think you will love to see the work they do with these literacy phones!

My Project

Students will use the microphone phones to read into while performing their guided reading. The phones allow them to hear themselves reading and therefore helps them to perfect through self correction. While using these phones students are able to hear their words and sounds clearly. We will also perfect our literacy and reading fluency by labeling the room to make a print rich environment for students.

The project will really help students beat the 30 million word gap talked about in a lot of education language development theory.

The idea highlights that low income students experience exposure to 30 million less words. Allowing them to practice reading and be exposed to words is one of the many ways to mitigate that gap.
