This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our first grade classroom is our home away from home. We love to all come together on our class rug for lessons and fun activities. However, our resources are limited. We are in need of tools to help us build foundational literacy skills, such as knowledge of phonics, vocabulary, and word building.

Students come from a wide range of cultures and families.

In our classroom, we are one big family, and we are part of a larger school community. Some students struggle with recognizing sight words, building vocabulary, and phonics skills. Other students have trouble sitting comfortably on our rug and chairs, and sometimes need another seating option.

My Project

With these fun new materials, students will be engaged to participate in literacy and word building activities. They can also take turns sitting on the bean bag chair when they are sharing what they have learned with their classmates. We can work together as a class to build words on the Word Building Board. Students can spin the Phonics Wheels to form new words, and they can use the Shades of Meaning Fans to make their writing even stronger and to build their vocabulary.

Having these materials will ensure that my students are constantly engaged in literacy learning each and every day.

My students will be able to build foundational literacy skills necessary for our classroom learning and beyond. Students will have a new, special place to sit in our classroom. These materials will also help to strengthen our bond as a classroom community.
