Literacy Library Needs Two New Sets Of These Exciting Books!
My students need these two sets (17 each) of classroom literacy center books, "Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead" and "I Don't Wish Nobody to Have a Life Like Mine," for our in-class reading assignments.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. O'Herlihy's classroom raised $559
This project is fully funded
My Students
These two books were read to death when a volunteer donated the two copies we have in our classroom. I have more requests for more copies of these two books than any other!
I can think of little else that would benefit our students than having new copies to open and devour for our Literacy Center reading assignments and activities.
Our kids have expressed deep appreciation for books that matter to them, that they can relate to, and that have real world relevance to them, their struggles and issues. I constantly aspire to satisfy that need for more reading materials that they are self-motivated to read and learn from. My kids thankfully are hungry for more, disproving the many cliches about them.
My Project
These two book selections are new books for us and in our classroom. We had one copy each of these two books, and I understand how successful they would be as class sets for our reading assignments. They are written in a way that speaks directly to these kids, who wrestle with related issues of redemption, resolve and restitution.
I have found a successful formula for encouraging critical thinking and an appreciation for self-directed educational opportunities by allowing the students to read books and materials that they have a genuine interest in and a need for.
By learning more about who they are not, they start to discover just who in fact they are in contrast. I have seen the hunger they have for these two books and want to satisfy that desire as soon as possible, while I have the brief opportunity to do so!
