Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have various disabilities, but enjoy reading with peers that are facing the same struggles. I use books in every lesson to target not only their speech/language goals, but also improve literacy skills. I want my students to be able to increase their participation in the classroom.
The students I see are first and second generation immigrants from Mexico and attend a Title 1 school.
Although their communication skills are not age-appropriate, they are eager to learn how to communicate more effectively. We use books to target sentence structure, vocabulary, sequencing, reading comprehension, and more! When my students have an "AHA!" moment, they become more self-motivated since they realize that they CAN do the task! My students are an amazing group of kids who are challenged every day, in and out of the classroom, because of their speech/language impairments. But their personalities and yearning to improve aren't affected by those challenges.
My Project
Have you ever had a really bad cold and lost your voice? How was it to express yourself to others? Have you ever been so nervous during a presentation that your sentences come out jumbled and with stutters? These are just a couple of the difficulties that my students face every single day. I work in groups with different objectives. To be able to target fluency, expressive language, and articulation, I use books. Books keep my students engaged and allow us to to improve on stuttering, reading comprehension, articulation, and more.
Funding my project will give my students access to books in their native languages, which are Spanish or English.
Their delays in speech/language negatively impact their communication skills, which carries over into the classroom. By using books in speech, I am able to not only work on communication skills, but also literacy skills. I believe my students have the ability to perform like their peers and I want to provide them with resources that will help us master their objectives.
