This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are remarkable and hard-working. We work together in a Title I school to meet and exceed grade-level academic performance. My students come from many different backgrounds with many different life experiences. We incorporate the rich cultures of each student and their families into our classroom and our learning. My students persevere through challenges they face from circumstances out of their control. Some of these circumstances are due to difficulty accessing resources due to socioeconomic situations.
No matter the challenges my students face, we work together to lift, encourage, and support one another to live our best lives and to achieve each goal we set for ourselves.
I am proud of my remarkable students and I am proud to be their teacher.
My Project
Getting books into the hands of each of my 5th graders has always been a fundamental part of my teaching. This year, while starting the school year via remote learning, this need to give the students access to books becomes even more important.
Having each student step away from a computer screen and read "Flying Lessons and Other Stories" will be pivotal in building knowledge and empathy in my classroom this year.
By providing each of the students with a copy of the book "Flying Lessons and Other Stories," the students and I will be able to share and discuss 10 unique stories that are just as unique as each of the students in my class. The students will read stories that they can relate to and they will read stories of people and places that they never knew of. Through theses stories and discussions, students will build an awareness and empathy for the world and people around them.
This book includes stories from 10 talented authors and is dedicated to the late children's literature author, Walter Dean Myers. Along with spending a significant amount of time reading, discussing, and responding to the stories in this book, my students and I will also do research on each of the authors and on Walter Dean Myers. Reading, speaking, listening, writing, researching...we will do it all through one book! Literacy Lessons through Flying Lessons!
