My students need more literacy centers such as Read, Build & Write Magnetic Sight-Word Board Game, Fishing for sight words, and Read Along Listening Station.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This is my second year teaching in a New York City public school in Brooklyn. It is a Title 1 school that is comprised of a high percentage of students with IEP’s and students who are English Language Learners. I am a special education teacher in a 1st-grade ICT (Integrated Co-teaching) classroom.
My school is a Title I school.
This means that most of my students have free or reduced lunch. They come from a low income home. My students are often reluctant, below-grade-level readers. Many of them have special needs and some are former English Language learners. My students love learning and making new friends. Many of them struggle to achieve their academic goals especially in reading and writing. I am hopeful with all these new centers for my classroom it will encourage and motivate students to continue reading and writing, build sight-word knowledge and help them in becoming better readers and writers for the future.
My Project
Students learn in lots of different ways, some are visual learners while others are kinesthetic and tactile learners. Children, who are motivated to read, spend more time reading. The reason behind wanting all these literacy games and listening station for my students is to motivate them to read and learn through games and read alouds.
Effective literacy centers ( Read, Build & Write Magnetic Sight-Word Board Game, Fishing for sight words, and Read Along Listening Station) increase students' motivation to read and to enjoy reading. As students read, write, speak, listen and interact with letters, words, and friends, they develop a desire to keep reading.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom by allowing my students to work with their peers and participate in hands-on literacy during center time.
The use of these materials will allow my students’ who have low self-esteem or low motivation when it comes to reading to gain access to text, learn high-frequency words, hear a model fluent reader and most importantly, earn the confidence they need to become a lifelong reader.
