Hello, I am an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at Martin Luther King High School in Manhattan where I teach low-income minority students from many different countries. Primarily, my ESL students come from West African countries such as Senegal, Mali, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Spanish-speaking nations, such as the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Most of them are economically disadvantaged and have never had very many opportunities in their lives. However, despite their setbacks, the majority of them really want to master the English language and succeed in life beyond school. As a teacher, I want to assure that my students can handle the outside world once they are out of school, whether it be in a job or another academic setting. It is important to me as an educator to know that I am empowering them by teaching them the necessary skills to succeed in life. The Comprehension Toolkit Bundle will help my students to improve their literacy skills, as well as improve their reading and cognitive ability. The stories are meaningful and engaging for the students. I am always fond of using reading materials that the students can relate to in some way. As an ESL teacher, I have no curriculum and no books to use with them. Everything that I do, I have to come up with on my own, which is often a daunting task. It would be wonderful to have these tools to use with my students! Thank you for your consideration!
