Literacy is Power!

My students need a set of Persepolis books so that we can explore the ways in which visual arts and words can work together to support the author's thesis.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Oberg's classroom raised $730

My Students

In our classroom, we explore literature through many types of texts. By the end of the year, our learners will be able to analyze and appreciate texts from a wide variety of genres.

This high school is a very diverse and vibrant place.

The learners are eager to explore the world through literature and are always making connections between the text, the world and themselves. Through building relationships among students from diverse backgrounds at school, learners develop skills in teamwork and empathy.

My Project

As we work through Persepolis, we will be exploring the following essential questions: 1. How do the themes in Persepolis resonate in current events? 2. What does it mean to grow up? 3. How do overlapping identities influence who we become? 4. How do visual arts and words work together to support Satrapi's thesis in Persepolis? For our final project in the Persepolis unit, learners will create a multi-genre composition in response to the question: How do you and Marji (main character in Persepolis) experience growing up? Through designing and composing this project, learners will compare the process of identity formation for themselves and for Marji.

As they explore responses to the questions above, learners will discover ways to identify examples of injustice and oppression in the text as well as in their own experiences.

With this information in hand, students will practice enacting social justice in their own worlds. Critical literacy skills gained in this unit will empower our students to create a more inclusive and just environment for all.
