Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege of teaching in second grade. My students are very special to me for several reasons. They come from very diverse backgrounds. Some live in poverty, some have learning disabilities, and some have social and emotional needs, but whatever their background is, I try to give everyone the supports they need to be successful in their learning. We learn from each other on a daily basis.
My students are always curious and are hands-on learners.
They learn best when given these opportunities!
My Project
Is it me or have you noticed that young children have lost interest in reading and writing? Well, I am here to expose my students to something new every day especially when it comes to literacy and writing. My students are eager to learn to read and write; however, we don't have all the learning tools in my classroom.
As their teacher, I know that elementary school years are the most critical years where students learn to early mathematics, how to read and write.
That is why I have created this project to promote literacy and writing skills in both languages Spanish and English in my classroom. My students will use the following tools during guided reading and Daily 5. During Daily 5, students work in different centers either by themselves or with their peers. I divide the groups into writing, read by myself, read with a buddy, word work, technology (listening to reading or writing) and meet with the teacher. During word work students will get to work on their weekly spelling and vocabulary words. That is where students will use the magnetic letter to create the words.
During meet with the teacher, I will use the syllables, magnetic letters, roll and read, finger spacer, reading fingers and more. I do guided reading on a daily basis for about 10-15 minutes with different groups based on their reading levels. I have students who are very low and will benefit from the tools in this project. The more hands-on activities and fun tools I expose them to, the more they are going to be engaged and want to read. I don't want my students to have a view that reading and writing is boring, instead I want to teach them to love it and use it everyday!
