Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students need literacy intervention to get them up to speed!
We have a spacious room for teaching Reading Recovery lessons, Response to Intervention, and designated English Language Development that could be more conducive to learning. We serve ten literacy groups each day from K-5.
We have Spanish bilingual, ELD and Special Education strands.
80% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. We are an urban Bay Area school with 270 students from diverse backgrounds. We offer science, gardening and technology. Our school library is cheerful, inviting and recently renovated by a corporate donor.
My Project
Students come to our classroom to get targeted instruction. The spacious room allows for two literacy teachers to provide intervention. We also work with beginning English language learners during ELD time. Each teacher sees ten groups a day. Students who are .75 years behind in reading are taught in small, guided reading groups. They also do writing and word study/phonics during this time.
A white-board would allow me to present lessons behind a small table. During ELD time, a larger group needs a space to sit comfortably on the floor. A carpet would serve this purpose, as well as help to absorb some of the sound when both teachers are working with children.
If you believe that students can succeed with targeted instruction, than you will definitely want to make my job easier.
My classroom will be a better place to teach and a better learning environment for my students.
