My Students

My students come to school for a second chance and a better chance at education. Many of my students have dropped out of high school or experienced such trauma that the high school experience wasn’t working for them. But, because they decided to come to the alternative high school it shows how much they truly value continuing their education; they made the choice to come back. Because of this many of our students are behind on credits and can use any resource possible to make learning easier.

Despite all this they come into class knowing that they are going to be valued.

With small class sizes, we have more of a family feel, the students get the attention that they seek, and one on one help they so desperately need. What is missing from my classroom are hands on manipulatives, 21st century technology, and supplies for inquiry and engineering based projects. My students yearn for engaging hands on equipment in my science classroom especially now that I am shifting to a project based, integrated learning environment. This will require my students to design and build solutions.

My Project

I want to have my students read engaging novels in my science class. This book documents the effects of an earthquake on a coastal town. My project will have students not only engage with the book but also with music. Since students today seem to need to listen to music at all times, I want to bring music into our science learning while also promoting literacy skills.

Students will read the novel and create a music playlist that portrays the development of the characters or characters over the course of the novel.

We will look at the science behind earthquakes, tsunamis, and the effects of the coastal towns. This story is especially relevant to my students because we live in the Pacific Northwest on the fault line and could be threatened by tsunamis.
