My students need a subscription to Science World for current science articles to promote science literacy while they read in the class library.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are from an inner city in Georgia and are often labeled as underprivileged, low-income, and under performing. It is unfortunate that they are labeled this way because my kids really rock! They work so hard everyday to show the world who they are and what they are capable of.
My school is a Title I school because all of our kids qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
The students I serve deal with environmental pressures everyday while still trying to maintain good grades. Peer pressure will sometimes get the best of them, but I know that engaging teaching and learning can make all of the difference and allow them to make better choices. It is my hope to continue to foster a fun and safe learning environment for my kids through the use science literacy.
A lot of my students do not realize that reading is critical to their success in all of their academic classes. It is up to me to show them how important and fun reading can be especially in a science classroom, so I would like to build a library! My students have limited access to printed material including periodicals. Most of them do not enjoy reading because they struggle and because they do not have access to interesting and relevant reading materials.
The Science World magazines contain current science articles that are leveled for middle school readers.
These articles will keep the students abreast of what is currently being discovered in parts of the world that they are not necessarily able to travel to.
The goal of building a science library in my classroom is to provide 6th grade students with a choice of items to read in a comfortable reading environment with resources that will foster a love for science and reading.
