Literacy in Many Languages

Help me give my students chapter books in their native languages to ease the transition to an all English classroom.

My Students

My ESL students are all the first generation of their families to live in the United States and derive predominately from Latino countries. Their parents speak little or no English.

The school is 100% free lunch and situated on the west side of Indianapolis.

We work hard to create a welcoming environment for our students and their families. It is our belief that student success is directly related to parent engagement. The students participate in a content based ESL program and are learning in classrooms with a majority of English speakers. Most of the students start kindergarten with no English. My students are hardworking, loving and loyal. They are always excited to learn and participate at school. The academic growth of the students show each year is astounding.

My Project

The ESL classroom in the inner-city is constantly changing, with an influx of new students that can read beautifully in their home language.

Resources are limited and the more students can learn in their native language the more they can transfer that knowledge to English.

Students often feel isolated when they first arrive in an all English speaking classroom, books in their familiar language can be the comfort that help students to adapt to their new surroundings. I am hoping to create a library of chapter books in languages other than English.
