Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 21 wonderful smiling, friendly faces greet me every day!
My students are hungry for knowledge, and they are very eager to learn.
I teach for the largest school district in Oklahoma.
My school is high poverty and 100% of our students receive free lunch and breakfast. They love to talk, share and are very social. They like to learn in a way that is meaningful and fun for them. The majority of my students are English Language Learners and have never had a positive interaction with reading. Despite the poverty, they work hard and are constantly trying to learn more and more. They are great and always appreciate anything that is given to them to help them learn.
My Project
A growing library is very important, we have a literacy curriculum that we follow but sadly because of district budget cuts our school library is unable to purchase extra books. The books I am requesting will help us supplement our literacy curriculum. There is no doubt that building reading and writing skills in the early years can make a huge difference in a students' school journey. The books I am requesting will help us learn more about print, letters, and words. Learning how to read will help us in our reading journey which will help my students enjoy reading for years to come.
My students come from homes in poverty, therefore they lack many important resources.
Having these resources in our classroom will allow for my students to have a place where they can explore reading and writing in ways that are developmentally appropriate for them. My students are eager to learn, I love to see their expressions when they make sense of our learning. I know that these materials will improve their confidence as they learn to read beyond the pictures in our stories.
