Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school with 2552 students, and 95 percent of them receive free lunch. Ninety percent of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, with a growing percent English Language Learner population at my school. In my 10th grade and 12th grade classes, most of my students are English Language Learners. We also have students whose families have been greatly impacted by COVID-19 directly and indirectly and since August of 2020 been teaching remotely via Google Classroom and Google Meets.

My Project

Many of my students do are not interested in reading and have not been exposed to the fun in reading. Their vocabulary and writing skills have suffered because of the few books they have read in their time. The pandemic even forced us to close down some local libraries. Now that we are back in school the book shelf I have is filled with a few dusty old books that few seem interested in reading. I would like to establish a class library of books that students can borrow, take home and return once they have read for fun. Students have asked me o bring in books that are colorful and more up to date. We feel books can open a world that these students may not have been exposed to. We have one public library in the place our city and less than half have visited this library or any library for that matter. Providing books to all students can create a love for reading and show students that you can see multiple points of view in books. These books will create a fun space for young students that will keep them highly engaged and motivated to continue using their love for learning through literacy.
