My Students
I teach in a diverse, Title I school in a suburb of Washington, DC. Preschool is often the children's first time being away from their parents, so I strive to make it a fun and engaging environment.
My preschool class includes two, three, four, and five-year-olds with special needs as well as a few typically developing peer models.
The children have a variety of disabilities, including Down Syndrome, blindness, autism, developmental delay, cerebral palsy, and language disorders. I also have a few students who are typically developing who serve as peer models for language and socialization. My students come from culturally and linguistically diverse families and many face socio-economic challenges.
My Project
My students will benefit from flannel board props for some of our favorite stories. Children attend better to stories told on the flannel board, versus simply read from the book. Pete the Cat is a preschool favorite, as are Brown Bear, Brown Bear and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. My students will also be able to use the felt board pieces to engage in the retelling of these familiar stories.
I'm requesting a variety of toys to help teach alphabet recognition.
Alphabots are a terrific toy to help build alphabet recognition skills. The children will play without even knowing they are learning letter names! Learning Locks will help build letter knowledge while also working on fine motor skills. I always appreciate toys that support multiple areas of development. Alphabet bubbles will be exciting to use in the water table- they teach letter sounds as well, since they feature pictures that start with each letter. Finally, letter pebbles are a fun addition to the sandbox or sensory table.
