Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

We call our students scholars because we believe in their potential to change the world. But, to truly become the next leaders and change agents our scholars must be able to read and compute at grade level. Children become readers on the laps of their parents. Unfortunately, many students from low income communities miss the opportunity to create these loving memories with their families. It has been said that students from improvished communities come into the classroom with a 30 million word gap! My students are no exception.

My Project

The products I chose will help my students become better readers. Time for Kids subscriptions will inspire and empower my students through the power of journalism. There are also so many benefits to reading novels in the classroom. Novels improve vocabulary acquisition, improves communication skills, and help children development invaluable background knowledge about the world outside of their own. Many of my students lack the motivation to read and write. Novels unlock curiosity and increases student engagement! Most importantly, giving children the gift of high interest books can bring them closer to developing a lifelong love of reading that will carry through for the rest of their lives.
