This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My new group of students this year are super fun and eager to learn. They have a wide range of disabilities and require adapted materials in order to engage with and understand their learning materials. Some of my students have vision impairments, such as Cortical Vision Impairment (CVI) and need visual supports that are adapted to meet their needs. Many of my students are non-verbal, or pre-verbal and need visuals to support their understanding of language and vocabulary. ALL of my students want to learn, and need materials suited to them to make them feel empowered and successful. I want to bring literacy opportunities to each one of my students in a way that is fun and engaging for them.
My Project
I am working on building a language and literacy library of adapted books aimed at supporting students with multiple disabilities. These adapted books allow my students to engage with literacy that may otherwise be inaccessible to them due to vision impairments, cognitive impairments, communication deficits, and more.
Adapted books can be created to help learn new skills, to reinforce vocabulary and language development, to provide opportunities for interaction, and to promote literacy skills for all students.
An adapted book is any book that has been modified in a way that makes it more accessible to a student who has difficulty with typical books. That can mean adding braille, making the text simplified, or adding movable pictures or visuals.
