Literacy Experiences in Kindergarten

My students need literacy centers such as Help-Yourself Language Trays, a Teaching Tiles Language Center, a Creating Sight-Word Sentences Center, a variety of Sight-Word Learning Centers, Phonemic Awareness Instant Learning Centers, and Magnetic Sound Sorting Boards.

I teach Kindergarten at a urban magnet school with a highly diverse population. We are in a low income neighborhood and we are pursuing candidacy in the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program.

I have a wonderful kindergarten class. My students come to school ready and eager to learn. They are a diverse group of students who enter school at a variety of levels and speak a variety of languages. Most of them have not attended preschool, but with teaching and continual support I get them ready for first grade. My students learn best with hands on learning. Unfortunately, my school cannot provide all the materials needed for hands on learning and as a result, my students are not able to reach their full potential and learn all that they can.

My students need materials for hands on learning. They need reading, writing, and phonetic tools to actively engage them during literacy. They need practice with sounding out words, building words, and noticing word patterns. The materials that are needed include Help-Yourself Language Trays, Teaching Tiles Language Center, Creating Sight-Word Sentences Center, Sight-Word Learning Centers, Phonemic Awareness Instant Learning Centers, and Magnetic Sound Sorting Boards. These materials will be used daily to support reading instruction through independent practice. It will give my students the opportunity to explore literacy in many ways and it will also allow them to work at their own level and pace.

With your support, you will make it possible for my students to experience literacy in various ways. By providing hands on learning materials, you will help them to be life-long learners and stronger readers. My students will be able to reach their full potential and learn all that they can.
