Do you remember how excited you were to hear your child(ren) or grandchild(ren) when they first started reading? Did you see the excitement in their eyes when they were able to read an entire book?
My students are first and second graders who attend a school that has recently been revamped.
They are adjusting to an extremely different learning environment that is strict and has a lot of structure. We are continuously working on routines and policies to ensure they are successful in school and in life.
I will be able to use the 4 Tag Readers to help my students become fluent readers. Many of my students came into the classroom lacking the very basics necessary to become successful readers. I am still working on letter sound recognition with both first and second graders. The Tag Readers will be used during our literacy centers. The goal is that all students have the ability to read independently for at least 30 minutes. My struggling readers are so excited when they practice a book and become fluent at reading it. I know the Tag Readers will engage them and they will become more excited to read for longer periods of time.
According to Tamika Thompson, "on average, African American twelfth-grade students read at the same level as white eighth-grade students.
Only 14% of African American eighth graders score at or above the proficient level." The achievement gap is a reading gap. In order to close this gap, students have to become better readers. The Tag Readers can begin the process of eliminating my students from the achievement gap. Your donations will help my students become successful in school and in life.
