Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher at a school with a high English as a Second Language (ESL) population. At one point this year, almost half of my class was comprised of ESL children. Our school has an ESL program, but the children spend most of the time in a regular classroom setting. Many children come to our school not speaking any English. Our school adopted a phonics based reading program several years ago. However, the program does not really address the needs of the children who can't keep up with the lesson, or those children who are ESL. It must be very scary to these children to not be able to feel successful in school. I would like some hands-on activities to help my low readers and my ESL children. My students need to feel successful during literacy time. These students would use these activities and games during centers, when volunteers come, with more advanced children, or independently. These games and activities were carefully selected to strengthen reading skills, build words, recognize word families, and build sentences. I also selected some picture cards to help students sort and classify using pictures, and match word families. I am very eager to receive these wonderful literacy activities and games. My students will be thrilled too. Thank you for your contribution to our literacy centers.
