Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In my Kindergarten class at our high-poverty urban charter school, I am lucky to have a diverse group of students that work at a wide range of reading levels. While some of my students are learning the letters of the alphabet, many children are beginning to sound out simple words, while others are reading chapter books! It is an exciting challenge for me as a teacher to meet the learning needs of students with such a wide range of abilities.

Our current phonics, reading and writing materials and curricula are geared towards teaching Kindergarten students who are beginning readers. However, this year, these basic skills are too easy for many of my students. In addition, several of my students are not yet ready for the challenge that beginning reading presents; instead, they need more work with basic phonics skills. In short, the "usual" Kindergarten curriculum does not meet the unique and wide-ranging needs of my current class.

In order to differentiate my instruction so that all students are learning exactly what they need for success, it is important that I begin to create literacy centers in my classroom. To do this, my students need hands-on materials and games that teach phonemic awareness, phonics, and reading skills that cover a range of levels. Literacy centers sound also be engaging and child-directed, so that students can develop independence and confidence in the skills I teach them as they practice on their own.

With your support of this project, my students will not be taught through one lesson that meets the needs of the "middle" of the group while frustrating some and boring others. Each student will be provided with the learning experiences they need to meet them where they are as readers. Not only will they be happier and more engaged as learners, but they will be excited and challenged as students who have the materials they need to reach new levels of phonics and reading. You will make it possible for all children in my classroom to receive targeted instruction and practice for the skills and knowledge they really need!
