"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body." —Richard Steele
We are a community of learners who have a deep seeded passion for reading.
My students come into the room every morning with a smile on their face, and a passion to learn. We start the day with morning work, centered around reading and writing, and then begin with a sight word of the day, and some phonics work before beginning our small group literacy centers. Literacy centers is their favorite part of the day. Small groups and centers were created so that intervention groups, and academically advanced small reading groups could occur at the same time. Some of our rotations include word work, with Words Their Way, a writing station, listening station, teacher table, computers and iPad, and small reading groups! During literacy centers, my students are focused on learning through varied centers, and work together in groups to further their understanding.
My Project
I am requesting two sets of Hear Myself Sound Phones, two sets of uppercase and lowercase letter stamps, and a complete phonemic awareness center kit. Phonics phones will help enhance our learning centers stations, as students can listen and distinguish between varying consonant and vowel sounds. The letter stamps will help students below grade level with repetitive practice of identifying uppercase and lower case letters while practicing letter sounds in an alphabet stamping station. Lastly, the phonemic awareness center kit will aid in my instruction, and the potential for our literacy centers, as it offers various activities for small groups that will enhance phonemic awareness, as well as build vocabulary and sight word recognition.
When entering first grade, students are anticipated to be reading at a level 3, based on the District Reading Assessment (DRA) .
I currently have 25 students; seven of whom are above grade level, three who are at grade level, and 15 students who are below grade level. This donation would open up the possibilities of growth and achievement for students in the classroom by enhancing literacy stations and instruction.
