Literacy Centers: Independent Time In The Kinder Classroom

My students need materials they can use during our daily literacy centers time. They work in these centers independently in groups of 4, while I meet with small groups.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching the whole child means focusing on all aspects of development. In our kindergarten classroom, we honor our bodies and minds, as well as rigorous academic practices. One of the goals for my students is that they be able to work independently and support each others' learning.

Of the 22 students in our class, some are transitional kindergartens (age 4) and some are regular kindergartens (age 5).

Half of the students are English language learners, whose primary language is Spanish. Our suburban school is situated in an impoverished neighborhood where students receive free breakfast and lunch. Some of these students live in low-income housing projects around the school, while some have moved from gang-infested housing projects in the city. My young students are extremely curious and enjoy learning through hands-on activities. Unfortunately, most of them lack parental support/involvement with school work, and need much scaffolding and discipline in the classroom.

My Project

In our classroom we practice balanced literacy - a curricular methodology that consists of reading and writing activities integrated in our schedule. Throughout the day, students practice shared, guided, and interactive reading and writing (during which time they learn the skills and strategies used by readers and writers), as well as have reading and writing workshops, during which they are taught a skill/strategy across the genres and practice using those skills/strategies on their own. As part of our program, students also have daily literacy centers during which they work independently (and with each other) by playing/doing language games/activities. Students are grouped in similar levels so that instruction can be differentiated. The centers are rotated daily, so that students complete all centers each week. With the Sort & Slide Language Activity and Instant Learning centers, students will learn to recognize more sight words, beginning, middle and ending sounds, spelling patterns, rhyming words, and more.

This school year has been particularly difficult, as our district further cut the budget for classroom materials.

I have had to purchase items such as copy paper, glue sticks, and white board markers, that I would not have needed to purchase in the past. The donations to this project will help make our literacy centers more interesting and stimulating for these kindergartens, and will help them master grade-level concepts that are setting the foundation for future learning.
